Wallpaper, 2015
Begun after the events at the offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris in early 2015, and sticking closely to the news, these wallpapers feature emblematic motifs derived from some hundred images gleaned on the Internet. The images were reworked and arranged in a neutralising overall composition in which the figure becomes lost. They show different facets of current events: drones, bombing, arms, arrests, killings. We end up watching these unbearable scenes, repeated endlessly on our screens, almost without emotion. However, when our gaze lingers on the details, the process runs counter to what we experience in front of our screens: we go from a sense of ordinariness to being struck. The effect is all the more obvious in that it is unexpected. In this bespattered environment, the viewer steeped in the images comes, in a sense, to inhabit the story.
